Whipping winds are fueling fierce wildfires in Southern California. This one burns near Malibu. It threatens some multimillion-dollar homes as well as Pepperdine University. Another fire burns in the northeast section of Los Angeles County.
Iraq's president has ordered Kurdish guerillas to lay down their arms or leave Iraq. The directive came after the rebels ambushed a military unit near Turkey's border, killing 12 soldiers.
With water supplies rapidly shrinking, Georgia's governor has declared a state of emergency. Governor Sonny Perdue made the declaration for the northern third of the state. He is also asking President Bush to declare it a major disaster area.
Students at a Texas college will not be wearing sweats to class. The new president at Paul Quinn College in Dallas has enacted a new dress code. All students must wear casual business attire. It's all part of his plan to improve student conduct and academic standings.
