A state of emergency has been declared in seven California counties. Intense wildfires have been fueled by fierce Santa Ana winds. Firefighters are battling massive blazes in Malibu and around San Diego.
President Bush is asking Congress for another 46 billion dollars for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. It brings to more than 196 billion dollars, the total requested by the administration this year. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says the president should not expect a rubber stamp for the request.
The parents of Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy cried as President Bush awarded him the Medal of Honor. Murphy was killed in Afghanistan while calling for help for his fellow SEALs. The Long Island native is the first SEAL to receive the award since the Vietnam War.
The weather could get in the way for tomorrow’s NASA Discovery launch. NASA managers say the space shuttle is in good shape but rain may move into the area around launch time. The shuttle is expected to launch around 11:38 a.m.
