The major mediating powers involved in the Middle East have agreed on a European Union plan to provide some aid to the Palestinians, many of whom have been suffering severe economic hardship as a result of the suspension of Western Aid following the victory of Hamas in the Palestinian election. The plan aims to release European Union funds through channels other than the Hamas government which is refusing to recognize Israel. The European Union, the United States ,the United Nations and Russia collectively known as the quartet said their plan would provide support for local health services, guarantee fuel supplies and provide for the basic needs of poor Palestinians. But they stressed the plan was limited in scope and duration.

Explosions in and around Baghdad have killed 41 people and wounded 100 others despite the deployment of tens of thousands of Iraqi troops backed by the US. In a bloody single incident, a suicide bomber in a car killed ten civilians and one Iraqi soldier. From Baghdad, Andrew North reports.

The attacks happened throughout the day from north to south Baghdad. They seem to be designed to send a message to the authorities that despite thousands of Iraqi troops on the streets, the bombers can still operate at will across the city and even escalate their violence. In many cases it was the extra troops who were the target. But, as is so often, unprotected passers-by made up most of the victims. The Americans are conducting an intensive search for their two soldiers who went missing in the Youssifiyah area south of the capital. This is an area of frequent insurgent activity and concerns are growing that they have been captured.

The United States and Japan have urged North Korea not to go ahead with any test of a new intercontinental ballistic missile. The Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Aso and the American ambassador to Japan Thomas Schieffer said the test firing would be grave and provocative. In Washington, the US government said any launch would violate a moratorium on long-range missile tests agreed by the North Korean leader Kim Jong Il.

The Ethiopian government says it is very concerned about events in neighbouring Somalia where Islamic militia took control of the capital Mogadishu and much of central Somalia more than a week ago. But Ethiopian Information Minister Bereket Simon denied claims that Ethiopian soldiers had entered Somalia but said his country had a right to monitor its border.A.H reports from Addis Ababa.

The leader of Somalia's Islamic Court Union, Sharif Sheikh Ahmed told reporters today that 300 Ethiopian soldiers had crossed the border. He said the troops had gone into Dollow in the southwest of Somalia near the intersection of the Kenyan, Ethiopian and Somali borders. The Ethiopian government has denied the accusation. The foreign ministry said that extremists in Somalia have been engaging in provocative action against Ethiopia in one of the border towns, and that the situation was being monitored carefully.

In the biggest upset so far in the football World Cup, Ghana has beaten the Czech Republic by two goals to nil. The Czechs were expected to go through to the next round with ease but Ghana playing in its first World Cup forced the result which means qualification will depend on the last group match. Watching the match in Cologne was our sports correspondent HarryPeert.

Ghana, one of four African new comers at this World Cup gave the continent a result it desperately needed. Ivory Coast have been eliminated. Angola have only one point. And Ghana lost their opening game to Italy two nil. But there were no signs of nerves as they ran the Czechs ragged. Ghana scored the quickest goal of the tournament when they went ahead in the second minute through Azanwajan but in spite of all the pressure and exuberant play it was not until 8 minutes before the whistle that Sulimantary made the game safe to take Ghana into the final group game against the United States with everything to play for.

In another unexpected result, the United States drew one one with Italy. Earlier Portugal beat Iran by two goals to nil ensuring their progress to the knock-out stage of the tournament.

Polling stations have closed in Slovakia's parliamentary elections with one exit poll suggesting a win for the popular left-wing opposition Snir party led by Robert Fiso. It showed the party on 27% of the vote against 19% for the conservative Prime Minister Micula Solinda who's presided over some of the most far-reaching free market reforms in Europe. During the campaign Mr. F promised voters higher taxes for the rich and an end to the privatisation of public services.

The government of Bolivia has announced that it wants to creat jobs by using revenues from the recently nationalised gas industry. The plan aims to create 100,000 jobs a year over the next five years. It will also allocate almost 7 billion dollars to social programs such as providing school meals and improving access to clean water. It is the latest step by the Bolivian president Evo Morales aimed at reducing poverty.
