The former president of Liberia Charles Taylor is spending his first night in custody in the Hague, awaiting trial for war crimes. The Sierra Leone Special Tribunal responsible for prosecuting war crime suspects asked for Mr. Taylor's trial to be held in the Netherlands for security reasons. The tribunal will now sit at the International Criminal Court in the Hague. Mr. Taylor faces 11 separate charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity, stemming from his alleged support for rebels in Sierra Leone during the civil war that took place there throughout the 1990s. The former head of the UN mission in Liberia Jacques Klein told the BBC it was vital that if found guilty, Mr. Taylor would be punished heavily.
Well, the key thing is we have to convince the people of Sierra Leone, and the region that justice was done. It all because until you punish the guilty, you can't really absolve the innocent, you can't come to the closure. So I'm really hoping that this is the end of this process, ah, and that if the evidence is there that he is convicted, and then we, we move on.
Anti-mafia police in Italy say they've arrested at least 45 people including the suspected heads of 13 crime families in an attempt to avert a turf war in Sicily. A senior anti-mafia prosecutor said all the suspects have been charged with mafia association and extortion. Christian Fraser reports from Rome.
For several months, police have been carefully deciphering coded messages that were written by the boss of bosses, Bernardo Provenzano. The messages have been recovered from the farmhouse where he was arrested, many of them corresponded to telephone conversations police had recorded over a period of 2 years. Among the key suspects was Antonino Cina, believed to have been the doctor of the previous boss Salvatore Riina, he was arrested in 1993. Another was Antonino Rotolo, he was under house arrest but regularly met key mafia figures and was believed to direct many of the Cosa Nostra's activities in Palermo. According to police the crackdown has averted a potential mafia turf war.

Israeli military sources say the air force targeted a car, they say, was carrying militants from the Al-Aqsa Martyr's Brigades who had been involved in planning attacks on Israel. But reports from the scene say that the militants escaped unhurt, instead medical sources say the blast killed 2 children, a boy aged 5 and a slightly older girl, a teenager also died. The Israeli air force frequently targets militants traveling in vehicles in Gaza, it's part of an effort to combat the Palestinian groups that fire crudely made missiles from Gaza into neighboring Israeli towns and villages.

Football, and in the World Cup finals, the hosts Germany have won their group with a 3:0 win over Ecuador, and go through to play Sweden in the next round. The Swedes managed a two all draw with England who also progress and now play Ecuador. These English fans were delighted with the way things had turned out.
Happy us, top the group, don't tackle Germany next, next round, so that's good, yes. Mixed reaction, although they’ve seen that win but obviously, the George gonna know. Fantastic it helps me, top of the group, that's all that we need. Got Rooney back, he looked fit, so we go in the next round, we've avoided the Germans, go past Ecuador, and that's all through to the final I think. Those are fantastic, excellent, what's better to do.
And in other matches in today's groups, Paraguay beat Trinidad and Tobago by 2 goals to nil, and Poland beat Costa Rica by 2 goals to one.
