The Israeli Air Force says it has attacked 3 bridges in central Gaza to prevent Palestinian militants moving an Israeli soldier captured in a raid on Israel on Sunday. There is no word so far of any casualties. Palestinian security officials say the main power station in Gaza has also been hit by missiles, cutting electricity to much of Gaza City. From Gaza, Allen Johnston reports.

For hours Israeli fighter jets went roaring through the night circling over Gaza then close to midnight came a report that they had struck the main high way that runs down the center of the territory. Israeli military sources confirmed that the air force had hit a bridge. They said that the aim was to try to prevent anyone who may be holding the captured soldier from moving him up or down the road. Later the jets hit two more bridges. This comes after days of extraordinary tension here with Israel massing its armor on the edge of Gaza.

Jonathan Beale reports from Washington.

Under the deal India will open up most of its nuclear facilities to international inspections for the first time. In return, the United States will cooperate with India's civilian nuclear programme. The US believes that the agreement will help bring in safeguards to prevent proliferation. The deal is also seen by the White House as essential to building a strategic partnership with India. However, critics of the deal have warned that it would send a wrong signal to Iran and North Korea at a critical time. India has never signed the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty and it secretly developed nuclear weapons.
