The Israeli government has indicated that it may accept the deployment of foreign peacekeepers in southern Lebanon. The suggestion had previously been rejected by Israel, but on Sunday the Defense Minister Amir Peretz told the visiting German Foreign Minister that there could be a role for a NATO-led force to secure the border once Israel forces had driven Hezbollah out of southern Lebanon. Crispin Thorold reports from Jerusalem.

As Israel's military campaign intensifies, so do the diplomatic efforts to find a resolution to this conflict. Just before Condoleezza Rice arrives here, Israel is making its position clear. It has a number of requirements including the enforcement of UN resolution 1559 which calls for the disarming of militias in Lebanon. But Jerusalem now says that it also wants robust peacekeepers to take the place of Unifil, the largely toothless United Nations force in southern Lebanon. Israeli prime minister says that he is prepared to accept the deployment of European Soldiers in southern Lebanon instead. This could be a NATO force or a European Union one. But Ehud Olmert says any troops deployed must have combat experience.

The Saudi Foreign minister Prince Saud Al Faisal has met President Bush in Washington to press the United States to support calls for a ceasefire between Israel and the Lebanese Hezbollah militia.

"We want to see a ceasefire to allow for the cessation of hostilities and to allow for the building of the forces of Lebanon on all the establishment of its sovereignty over the whole of its territory. That is the important thing"

America is one of the few countries not to have called for an immediate cessation of hostilities, arguing that Israel has a right to defend itself. The American Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice attended the meeting before she left Washington for the Middle East.

Meanwhile, hostilities in southern Lebanon between the Israeli and Hezbollah fighters have intensified. A BBC correspondent in southern Lebanon says Israeli targeted vehicles around the city of Tyre, making it extremely dangerous for people trying to heed previous Israeli warnings to flee. Israeli attacks were also reported in Sidon, southern Beirut and the Bekaa Valley. Hezbollah rockets again reached the northern Israeli city of Haifa, hitting both residential and industrial buildings in the city.

The latest Israeli attacks in southern Beirut came only a few hours after the United Nations Emergency Relief Coordinator Jan Egeland toured the area where Hezbollah has its headquarters. Mr. Egeland likened the destruction of block after block of homes as a return to what he called "the Dark Ages" and said it was a violation of humanitarian law. But he also said Hezbollah should not carry out military operations in civilian areas and called on both sides to stop the violence. Christine Frazer reports from Beirut.

Jan Egeland toured the southern suburbs of Beirut this morning as buildings still smoldered from the early morning raids. High residential blocks of flats reduced to piles of rubble. Large areas in this part of the city are now deserted. But there is the out lonely figure still picking through dust. Mr. Egeland said he was shocked by the total destruction he'd seen, and called on both sides to stop the attacks. But within hours after Mr. Egeland leaving the suburbs the bombing resumed. Three huge blasts were heard across the city. There was difficulty to see what is left to destroy.

You are listening to the World News from the BBC.

The deposed Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has been taken from prison to hospital in Baghdad 16 days into a hunger strike after lawyers say his health sharply deteriorated. Doctors treating the 69-year-old former Iraqi leader are giving him fluid and feeding him by tube. Saddam Hussein started his hunger strike in protest at the lack of security for his lawyers. Three of them have been murdered since his trial started.

European Union ministers are meeting later on Monday in Brussels to discuss financing research on embryonic stem cells a week after President Bush vetoed federal funding for the research in the United States. The EU currently finances such works under strict conditions, but some member states are opposed to it. Alex Krueger reports from Brussels.

The funding for stem cell research is part of the EU science program for the next 7 years. The EU currently funds stem cell research but under strict conditions. A number of countries are opposed including Germany, Austria and Slovakia. They argue that the embryos the stem cells come from have the potential to become human beings, and therefore it's wrong to use them for experimental purposes. They also object funding research which is not allowed in their own countries. Between them they may have enough votes to delay approval of the entire research program budget.

The American cyclist Floyd Landis has completed an impressive comeback to win the Tour de France. Floyd Landis finished the final stage in Paris with an overall lead of 57 seconds, ahead of the Spaniard Oscar Freire in second place. Andreas Kloden of Germany was third.
