A group of alleged suicide bombers were arrested in Britain after police said they'd uncovered a plot to blow up transatlantic airliners has been charged by prosecutors, following more than a week of questioning. Altogether 11 people face charges, 8 are accused of conspiracy to murder, while 3 are charged with other offences under anti-terrorism legislation. A further 11 people are still being questioned. Daniel Shore reports.
For the past ten days since police carried out the first arrest in connection with the alleged plot, detectives have been working flat out to interview the suspects and amass sufficient evidence to bring charges. 8 men, all in their twenties, are accused of conspiring to murder, and a new offence - preparing acts of terrorism. It's alleged that they plotted the bomb attacks between January and August this year. Deputy assistant commissioner Peter Clark said searches of 69 sites had yielded thousands of items for examination.
The Italian Prime minister Romano Prodi says Italy is willing to lend the United Nations peacekeeping force for southern Lebanon. A task that France's been expected to shoulder. Italy has offered to make a substantial contribution to the force. And Mr. Prodi said the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan would respond to the offer by the weekend. But the UN Deputy Secretary General Mark Malloch Brown told the BBC he was still hopeful of a greater French peacekeeping role in Lebanon.
France's already been keen in getting this resolution and keen in its political role in getting the earlier resolution 1559 with Syria's withdrawal from Lebanon done, so France's played a big role and we hope it can go on doing so.
A week after the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, the Israeli armed forces said they have shot 3 Hezbollah fighters in a confrontation in southern Lebanon. The Israelis apparently opened fire when a group of armed men approached an Israeli army position. Nick Thorpe sent this report from Jerusalem.
The shooting incident in southern Lebanon illustrates the fragility of the UN brokered ceasefire. According to a spokesman for the Israeli army, a group of armed Hezbollah fighters were spotted near the village of Shamer during the day. At that time Israeli soldiers still stationed inside the country took no action, the spokesman underlined, only after 7pm when the armed men approached an Israeli position in what was described as a threatening manner did the Israeli soldiers opened fire. According to the spokesman, 2 were later confirmed dead, and a third injured. No Israeli soldiers were injured, he said.

United Nations peacekeeping soldiers in the Democratic Republic of Congo have evacuated a group of foreign ambassadors who've been trapped in a house in Kinshasa, because of a new fighting between rival factions. The ambassadors who were discussing the security situation with the opposition presidential candidate Jean-Pierre Bemba in his home were taken to the UN's headquarters in Kinshasa. The renewed clashes came a day after the result was announced of Congo's presidential election showing no clear winner. The conflict appeared to be between supporters of Mr. Bemba and the incumbent President Joseph Kabila. They will compete in the run-off election in October.
Police in Burundi have arrested the former president Domitien Ndayizeye in front of the Senate building in the capital Bujumbura. He was detained after the senate lifted his immunity as a Member of the House. A lawyer from Mr. Ndayizeye told the BBC that the arrest was connected to an alleged coup attempt. The UN mission in Burundi has called for strict respect for the law and for the dignity of Ndayizeye.
The supreme leader of Iran Ali Khamenei says his country has decided to pursue forcefully its nuclear programme. Ayatollah Khamenei was speaking a day before Tehran was due to answer a call by the United Nations to stop enriching Uranium. Ayatollah Khamenei also accused the United States of putting pressure on Iran despite its denial that it seeking to develop nuclear weapons. The Iranian Foreign Minister Manoochehr Mottaki said that a negotiated settlement was still within reach.
We hope there is some cooperation and negotiations, respecting to the rights of Iran to have nuclear technology and removing any questions to catch a comprehensive solution.
President Musharraf of Pakistan has expressed support for the country's cricket captain Inzaman-ul-Haq after his team was judged to have forfeited a match against England in London on Sunday. The captain said President Musharraf had phoned him and backed his decision not to resume play after the team had been accused of cheating by altering the condition of the ball. However the captain will still have to answer charges.
