The leader of the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah Hassan Narsrallah has told hundreds of thousands of supporters that they've won a historic victory over Israel. He was speaking in Beirut in his first public appearance since the five-week conflict began in July. Hassan Narsrallah said Hezbollah had taken on one of the strongest armies in the world and described the outcome as a victory for Lebanon, for Palestine and for the whole Arab world.

Your resistance and steadfastness have foiled all the objectives of the aggression and this is a victory. Your resistance and steadfastness have dealt a severe blow to the new Middle East project Codonleezza Rice talked about, saying that its birth was a war in July.

Israel has dismissed the Hezbollah leader's speech as a publicity stunt and described his claim of victory as ridiculous.

President Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan has told President Bush that the Palestinian issue is at the heart of international terror and extremism. Speaking after talks at the White House, he said he believed President Bush had the desire to end the conflict between the Palestinians and Israel. The meeting was overshadowed by General Musharraf's comments on American television, saying that the United States had threatened to bomb Pakistan back to the Stone Age unless it helped oust Taliban from Afghanistan.

A high-speed magnetic train has crashed during an experimental run in north-western Germany, killing almost all those on board. A police spokesman said 25 people were known to have died when the train known as the Transrapid smashed into a maintenance vehicle. The train was travelling along a monorail test track when it crashed near the town of Lathen. Our Berlin correspondent Tristana Moore reports.

The train had been travelling at around 125 miles an hour when it collided with the maintenance vehicle which was on the track. Such was the impact of the crash that wreckage was scattered over a large area. The rescue operation was difficult because the train was on an elevated track and emergency services struggled to reach the carriages. The German authorities have now launched an investigation. According to initial reports from prosecutors, the crash was caused by human error, possibly a failure of radio communication, but many questions remain unanswered.

Foreign ministers at the United Nations Security Council and ten other nations have been meeting in New York to discuss the crisis in the Darfur region of Sudan. The American Secretary of State warned that time was running out and she accused Sudan of failing to protect its own citizens.

The Italian government responding to concerns over illegal phone tapping has passed a decree banning the media from publishing the contents of such surveillance. Newspapers could be fined a maximum of about one and a half million dollars if found guilty of breaking the new law. The measure was announced after an emergency meeting at the Italian cabinet which considered allegations that politicians, businessmen and sports stars had been spied on. Christian Fraser reports from Rome.

The government's decision to ban the use of phone tap material comes just a few days after police rounded up 21 suspects including the former head of Security at Telecom Italia, who were alleged to be part of the same spy ring. The group had collected sensitive information for several years including phone and bank account records. Investigators say part of the information they gathered came from illegally tapped telephone conversations or stolen from police in government databases. Their motives are still unclear. But politicians on all sides have expressed deep concern.

The Japanese space agency has launched a new space probe to explore the sun. The solar B probe assisted by America and Britain will observe the sun from the earth's orbit. Our science correspondent Pallab Ghosh has the details.

The solar B spacecraft will provide the clearest pictures to date of the sun's tempestuous atmosphere and its twisting magnetic fields. In particular, it will observe how solar flares develop. These are tremendously powerful explosions that occur on the sun surface. Each one releases energy equivalent to tens of millions of atom bombs and hurls planet size chunks of plasma into space. These particles can interfere with electronic systems on earth. It's hoped that the results from the mission will help scientist to predict when these flares will occur.

The European commission is to recommend that Romania and Bulgaria join the European Union on January the first next year albeit with some reservations. The move will boost the number of EU members to 27. The report which will only be published on Tuesday says both countries have made progress in their preparations. But it also raises the prospect of sanctions if they do not make further reforms after joining the EU.
