Costas Karamanlis said he shared people's rage. So many fires all at once could not be a coincidence. He said those responsible would be found and punished. The worst hit area has been the Peloponnese region from where Malcolm Brabant reports.

The mountainside around Zaharo where so many people died is still glowing red. Occasionally, flames flare and reached up the slopes, raising fears that villagers who stay behind to protect their homes may also perish. Radio stations have been getting anguish calls from people trapped in remote communities, appealing for help. The authorities say that until all the fires have been extinguished, they'll have no idea of the final casualty list. A 65-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the fire in Areopolis in the Mani region. The pensioner has been charged with arson and several counts of homicide.

The Indian President Pratibha Patil has condemned two explosions which occurred in the southern city of Hyderabad, killing at least 35 people and wounding many more. Most of the dead are said to be killed in a crowded market area. The other blast was in a Hyderabad park where families were enjoying a laser light show. The Chief Security Guard of the park V explained what happened.

We heard a blast in the auditorium where a laser show was going on. We rushed in and saw people running out. A few were bleeding. Only then did we realize that it was a bomb. The injured have been sent to a nearby private hospital. Ministers and other officials have visited the scene.

The Iraqi government has imposed a ban on some vehicles in and around Baghdad. A televised statement from an Iraqi military spokesman said the curfew on motorcycles, cars and bicycles had been put in place to protect citizens in advance of a Shiite Muslim festival early next week. Pilgrims have been the subject of attacks in the past.

The Israeli army has shot and killed seven people in and close to the Palestinian territories. Over the past week, Israeli troops have killed some 20 Palestinians. Israelis say their operations are carried out to ensure the safety of Israeli civilians. Aleem Maqbool reports from Ramallah.

The five gunmen shot dead by Israeli soldiers were from various Palestinian militant groups. Two were killed just inside southern Israel after infiltrating Gaza's northern border. Three more were killed in an Israeli army raid in the West Bank city of Jenin. They included a local commander of the Islamic Jihad movement. But in a further incident inside the northern Gaza Strip, Palestinian medical sources say two boys; civilian cousins aged 15 and 16, were shot and killed close to an Israeli observation post near the town of Beit Lahia.

Reports from Burma say one of the key organizers of the past week's fuel protests may have been arrested. The activist Htin Kyaw came to prominence during a wave of protests over the economy earlier this year. Earlier, the Burmese military authorities announced that 13 dissidents arrested during the protest may be prosecuted under security laws carrying up to 20 years in jail.

North Korea says record rains and floods this month have left at least 600 people dead or missing, more than twice the previous estimate. The North Korea state news agency reported that thousands of people have been injured and that more than 100,000 were homeless. It's said there'd been an extensive damage to infrastructure caused by as much as 80 centimeters of rain, the heaviest rainfall in 40 years.

A hot-air balloon has burst into flames just outside the Canadian city of Vancouver, killing 2 people and injuring 11 others. Witnesses said passengers jumped from the craft some with their clothes alight. Ian Gunn reports from Vancouver.

The passengers and their pilot were preparing for a leisurely hot-air balloon ride at sunset. They were on board the balloon, and then it was just lifting off but still tethered to the ground with long ropes when an intense fire erupted on board. Then according to officials, the heat of the blaze forced the balloon higher, breaking the mooring lines, sending the flaming balloon rapidly into the air. It drifted a short distance before crashing into a trailer park. There the fire spread quickly, destroying 3 trailer homes and two cars.

The former president Valéry Giscard d'Estaing who put him into office in 1976, said Raymond Barre had taken his place among the best of those who serve the country. President Nicolas Sarkozy said his vision and his international experience set him apart.
