An 18-year-old has been questioned in New Zealand as part of a crackdown on hi-tech criminals
He's believed to be leader of an international cyber-crime gang stolen the millions of pounds from people's bank accounts. But now the 18 years old who's known by the Alias Akill or Akill has been questioned in New Zealand as part of FBI -led crackdown on the high-tech crime. The FBI estimates that more than a million computers were targeted and more than 12 million pounds stolen. Katie Rasser reports.
Could a teenager from New Zealand be the linchpin in the international crime network,accused of scheming 20 million dollars from people's bank accounts. Know only by his online name Akill, he said to be very bright and very skilled. It's alleged a cyber criminal took control of more than a million of computers and run them using botnets, a term even the police officer in charge admitted he was having to get his head around.
We executed Warrents , we've spoken to Akill, he's assisting us with the inquires, he hasn't been charged. We thought _ to release the natural of this inquiry this stage. and, but the inquires are ongone . We've got to analyze computer equipment which we've seized.
The 18-year- old comes from New Zealand's North Ireland, the town of Hamilton, and is allegedly the bot master, he's arrest follows an investigation by the FBI, operation Botroast two, in wich 8 people have so far been indicted, pleded guilty or convicted. The Dutch also set their asides on Akill and contacted the Newzealand police. So what is the botnet. It's a global network of hijacked of PCs, the malicious software acts like a virus installing itself on computers around the world. Once it's in it, it communicates with the central location, individul computer effectively becomes a zombie which allows hackers to collect people's personal bank details, credit card numbers and log in names.
The key thing is to get anti-virus software updated continuously. It used to be the case people send out anti-virus software every year or every month. Now it's regular do it every day and to ensure that ,you've got at least a measure of protection.
Akill alledgely invented complex software that invaded computers spyware systems. He said to be cooperating with the police. But if he's charged and convicted ,could face 10 years in prison.
