Hello, very good afternoon to you from the CNN center in Atlanta. I am Cory Kessler, here is a look at what's happening Now In The News.
Five runways in Denver's International Airport are open. Officials hope to have the 6th open by Sunday. Still the travel plans of thousands of passengers still stuck at the facility have not improved. Managers say it will take all weekends to clear the huge backlog of cancelled or delayed flights to and from Denver. A massive blizzard this week shut down Denver's airport for nearly 2 days. Weather also forced delays at other airports nationwide.
A 3.5 magnitude earthquake rattled the San Francisco Bay area this morning. The quake was centered 4 miles east-southeast of Berkeley along the Hayward fault line. Today's earthquake was the 3rd to hit the area this week. No one was hurt in any of the earthquakes.
A Louisiana couple whose baby's toes were gnawed off by a family pet has pled to improper child supervision. Under the plea deal, Mary and Christopher Hansche will also be forced to give up their pets, a pit bull pup and a ferret. One of the animals gnawed off 4 of their 4-month-old daughter's toes while the couple slept. The couple isn't sure which animal was involved. The infant was treated and released. She and the couple's 2-year-old son are now in their grandmother's care.
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas are meeting today in their first face-to-face summit as leaders. Officials are not saying what the two will discuss. But it is suspected that the recent fighting in Gaza between Hamas and Fatah is among the key topics.
The UN Security Council has approved the resolution imposing sanctions against Iran. Today's unanimous vote wraps up 2 months of negotiations within the Security Council. The US wanted tough sanctions while other Security Council members wanted a softer approach. The sanctions are designed to force Iran to suspend its uranium enrichment program.
And the US military announced that a top Taliban leader said to be close to Osama bin Laden is dead. The military said he was killed in an air strike this week near the Afghan border with Pakistan. However, wire services are reporting that a Taliban spokesman says Mullah Akhtar Mohammed Osmani was not killed.
And that is the news of this hour. For more on what's happening around the world, you can tune into CNN Television or log onto CNN.com. Don't forget you can get updates through your wireless phone as well any time, day or night. I'm Cory Kessler, thanks for watching.
