Good afternoon, I’m Cory Kessler at the CNN center in Atlanta. Here’s a look at what’s happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
There is no comment from US or British officials on an alleged terror threat targeting the English Channel Tunnel. The British newspaper the Observer reports that Islamic terrorists may be plotting an attack on the tunnel during the holiday season.
Ethiopia says its fighter jets attacked Somalia Islamists today in villages along the border. Ethiopian officials say it was in self-defense and to defend the UN-backed government of Somalia. Prime Minister Meles Zenawi says Ethiopia is at war with Islamic militants in Somalia.
An Italian security expert who met with ex-Russian spy Alexander Litvenenko the day he was poisoned has been arrested in Naples. Mario Scaramella is under investigation for possible arms trafficking and violating secrets of his office. Police say the arrest is not connected to the death of the former Russian spy.
Iran says it will begin the production of 3000 centrifuges at one of its nuclear facilities. The announcement comes a day after the UN Security Council voted to impose sanctions on Iran for its nuclear program. Iran says its program is for purely peaceful energy purposes. The United States is among several countries that suspect Iran is building nuclear weapons.
This is how they celebrate Christmas Eve in Rio de Janeiro. Hundreds lined the streets to watch the religious and majestic splendor of the very first Christmas parade on the world famous Copacabana Beach. Looks like fun.
You are now up to date. For more on these stories and other news of the day, CNN is your source online, on TV or when you are on the go.
Words&Expressions
Rio de Janeiro (pron. IPA [ˈʁiu dʒi ʒaˈneiɾu]; Portuguese for River of January) is the name of both a state and a city in southeastern Brazil. The city was the capital of Brazil (1763-1960) and of the Portuguese Empire (1808-1821). Commonly known as just Rio (particularly in English and by its inhabitants), the city is also nicknamed A Cidade Maravilhosa - "The Marvelous City".
