I’m Nicole Lapin at the CNN center in Atlanta. Here’s your NOW IN THE NEWS update.
A line of sever thunderstorms has spawned several tornados all across Florida. Two homes were destroyed by one twister in Lake City that’s west of Jacksonville. And in Pasco County that’s near Tampa, it was more of the same. A tornado leveled one home and damaged more than two dozen others. Police say two people suffered minor injuries.
And the singer known as the “Godfather of Soul” has died. James Brown’s agent says the legendary entertainer died overnight in Atlanta of congestive heart failure. Brown’s contemporary say he was one of the most influential men in entertainment.“Please, Please, Please”, “The Payback” and “Living in America” were among some of his greatest hits. James Brown died at the age of 73. And CNN.com has been asking you, our readers and our viewers about your thoughts of the passing of James Brown. Well here is what you had to say.
Benjamin Wilkinson of Berkeley California says “Thanks to James Brown for making music and for making music better than anybody. You are a major influence on me and my fellow musician friends.”
And Diane Simpson writes in, quote “I saw James Brown (who) performed at the Teenage Awards Music International Show in Santa Monica in 1965. The show included the Rolling Stones, the Beach Boys, Marvin Gaye and many many others. James Brown stole the show."
Iraqi authorities say at least ten people were killed and fifteen others wounded in a bomb attack in an open-air market in Baghdad. Police fear those numbers could even rise as search teams uncover more bodies from the debris. This incident was just one of several bombings in Iraq. A police suicide bomber attacked at a police checkpoint in the city of Ramadi killing three officers and a second suicide bomber killed three people in an attack on a minibus.
In Bethlehem, the biblical birthplace of Jesus Christ, Christmas celebrations were muted today. Political tensions kept many tourists away from the West Bank town. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas did attend midnight Mass in Manger Square under heavy security guard though; he expressed hope for more peace breakthroughs.
And for thousands of people in Australia, this is the only way to spend Christmas. Sing the song and then in the surfs, spotting the bikinis and swim trunks. In a day then forget to wear of the Santa hats though, and you see right there some even brought trees to plant in the sand. And for those if you don’t know it’s summer time down under.
With that you are now up to date. Merry Christmas to those of you who are celebrating. For more on these stories and other news of the day, CNN is always your source online or on television or even when you’re on the go.
