Good afternoon, I'm Cory Kessler at the CNN center in Atlanta. Here’s a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
Deposed Iraqi President Saddam Hussein was hanged at dawn Saturday in Baghdad. A little more than three years after he was flushed from his hiding place by US troops. Hours after the execution, Iraqi television broadcast this video showing Hussein being led to the gallows but they did not show the actual hanging. Hussein was put to death less than two months after being convicted for ordering the killing of villagers after a failed assassination attempt. CNN has learned Hussein's body has been taken back to his hometown of Tikrit by a delegation of elders and there will be a funeral Sunday. He will be buried in the cemetery where his sons and other relatives are buried.
It's unclear whether they were intended as revenge for the Saddam Hussein's execution, but there were three deadly car bomb attacks in Iraq today, all targeting Shiite areas. Two of them killed at least 36 people in northwest Baghdad. The other killed at least 30 people in Kufa and southern Iraq.
A Boeing 747 from the presidential fleet is carrying the body of Gerald Ford to Washington at this hour. It's scheduled to land at Andrews Air Force Base at 5:20 pm Eastern. The former president's body will be taken to the US Capitol where it will lie in state.
Thousands of fans showed up in Augusta, Georgia to share their memories of James Brown during today's final farewell to the "Godfather of Soul". Brown died Christmas Day of heart failure. He was 73 years old.
Tornado warnings and watches are in place in parts of the Southeast, as severe storms rumbled across the region. No injuries are reported after a tornado touched down west of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Texas residents are cleaning up after tornado's touchdown there on Friday. One death and at least a dozen injuries are reported there. The twisters damaged dozens of homes, uprooted trees and snapped power lines as well.
And that is the news this hour. For more of what's happening around the world, tune in to CNN television or log on to cnn.com, and don't forget you can get updates through your wireless phone as well anytime, day or night. Thanks for watching.
