You want to make that group the primary group of reference in the person's life, and in order to do that, you actually have to isolate the person from his family and bring him into the group and provide what the family does.
I led a double life, you know, my family came secondary. My parents, my sisters, no one knew I was a loyalist paramilitary. You know, it was a secret life I had, I lived a selfish existence, secret of murders. Family activities, family life clashed, I never went to my brother's wedding. I couldn't say any to my brother. I m not going to your wedding. I've to go and I have an operation. I have been looking at this guy for a month and I have an operation, I have an individual to kill. Are you going to say that when he was having a church wedding? You can't, so you fall off with them.
As the London bombers became closer, their circle of association appears to have become smaller.
You find that the group becomes someone's life. The cause becomes their life, and they interact less and less with friends and family members who were not involved in the cause.
The group was turning inwards, spending more and more time together and showing signs of a shift in outlook.
There were signs as time went on, as the group was becoming more radical and we see that concerns were raised about the activities in the gym, and there also seems to be a falling-out with the elders of local mosques in the area, and the three bombers who lived in the local region.
And there were signs of change at home. It has been reported that Mohammad Khan's marriage had recently broken down and that he moved out of the family house. Relations between Germaine Lindsay and his wife have been reportedly estranged too. She suspected him of having an affair because he would disappear for days at a time.
What was originally a friendship had in the run up to the bombing become something which was much more radical, much more political, and had a very strong ideological focus, you know, it had changed from the original friendship.
The four men had gone from being friends to being co-conspirators in Britain's first suicide attack.
Six fifty-one a.m., Hussain, Tanweer and Khan arrived at Luton Station car park.
