They are on the platform, they are getting ready to get on the train. It doesn't make a difference, in the sense who is on the train, and they would have dehumanized the victims, they're not thinking about the people they're going to kill as people.
Dehumanization is a key thing, any group which believes that it's in conflict or in competition with another group, and you find that they dehumanize the other group. They see them as things, as monsters.
For almost 20 years, loyalist paramilitary member Michael Stone dehumanized his victims. In 1988, he carried out his most notorious mission, launching an attack at an IRA funeral. The assault killed three people and injured 60, Michael Stone was imprisoned shortly afterwards.
I had seven hand grenades and a pipe strung my waist, two handguns, I pulled the pin of a grenade, and when I pulled it out I said "there's no going back" and I threw the pin away . Could've replaced the pin and walked away. I threw the pin away, no way to go now.
Many of the crowd gave chase in hot pursuit of the man who stopped, turned and threw another grenade.
The crowd stopped as I moved forward there was a voice from the back of me "hey, boy" I looked it on, this individual appeared, black coat, black trousers, white shirt, typical IRA steward. I turned around and fired once, he dropped, he was dead. You dehumanize an individual, you know you don't go. That's part AN. He has a wife, he has children, he has sisters, you know coz' then you lose the edge, you have to say, "that's a target." That's two shots to the chest, among the head, do it quick. You're killing the enemy, you're killing the soldier, you're killing the flip side of yourself. So get it done. 8:50 am.
