In the Womb: Animals opens a window into fetal development in the animal kingdom, unlocking mysteries of one of nature's most remarkable journeys.
On December 10th, the National Geographic Channel takes you where we have never been before In The Womb--- Animals.
From the creators of the groundbreaking documentary In the Womb, come breathtaking images of animals from conception to birth, showing the most intimate details about dogs, dolphins and elephants.
Each starting as a single egg, their journey, their evolution is unique. This mammal has the longest gestation of any on Earth, and grows from smaller than a grain of sand into a five-ton elephant.
Inside of its mother the legs are practicing running, making the developing joints flexible and strong to prepare for its tremendous weight. At 14 months, they have some hair but their skin is still as soft and sensitive as a human's.
Within two years, an elephant produces one calf. A dog can produce three litters of puppies. Using a special ultrasound device, you are able to see three-dimensional images in real time. The ears, the legs, the whiskers. The puppies opening their mouths in an in-womb rehearsal for panting, a behavior essential to regulate body temperature once they are born.
A mere 45 days into the development, you can clearly make out the nose, the most advanced sense. 200 million sensory receptors are forming that will enable them to smell approximately hundreds of times stronger than humans.
In just a year, dolphins go through incredible stages of development to adapt to their environment immediately at birth. The flippers to steer and glide through water. The eyes opening and closing to see in and out of the water. And swimming around in the amniotic fluid, practicing for the moment when it emerges tail first to swim alongside his mother.
For the first time on television, the intimate details, startling discoveries and four-dimensional images of In The Womb--- Animals premieres December 10th at 8:00 on the National Geographic Channel Dare to Explore.
