Graduate business students in the United States and Canadaaremore likely to cheat on their work than their counterparts inotheracademic fields, the author of a research paper said onlastWednesday. The study of 5,300 graduate students in the UnitedStatesand Canada found that 56 percent of graduate businessstudentsadmitted to cheating in the past year, with many sayingtheycheated because they believed it was an accepted practiceinbusiness.
Following business students, 54 percent of graduateengineeringstudents admitted to cheating, as did 50 percent ofphysicalscience students, 49 percent of medical and health-carestudents,45 percent of law students, 43 percent of liberal artsstudents and39 percent of social science and humanitiesstudents.
Students have reached the point where theyre making theirownrules, said lead author Donald McCabe, professor of managementandglobal business at New Jerseys Rutgers University.Theyllchallenge rules that professors have made, because theythinktheyre stupid basically, or inappropriate.
McCabe said its likely that more students cheat than admittoit.
The study, published in the Septr issue of the AcademyofManagement Learning and Education, defined cheating asincludingcopying the work of other students, plagiarizing andbringingprohibited notes into exams.
McCabe said that in their survey comments, businessschoolstudents described cheating as a necessary measure and thesort ofpractice theyd likely need to succeed in theprofessionalworld.
The typical comment is that whats important is getting thejobdone. How you get it done is less important, McCabe said.
Vocabulary:
