iPhone generating buzz
The competitive threat from the newly announced Apple iPhone could hurt leading mobile handset makers like Nokia and Motorola.
The Apple announcement stole the thunder from other products being announced at the annual consumer electronics show, including Dell's new offerings for the digital home. Conway G. Gittens reports from New York
This is the Reuters technology update for Wednesday. I'm Conway Gittens in New York.
It's one-day after Apple unveiled its iPhone and now analysts are talking about what it will mean for the wireless market. The sleek design, the touch-screen, and the convergence of phone, MP3 player, and Internet device - seems to have won many analysts over. And many predict Apple will see strong American demand, despite the $500 to $600 price tag....With that in mind, most of the competitive focus is on the two big cell phone makers. Nokia unveiled a series of so-called smart-phones this week - including this one -but can it stand-up against the iPhone? And the pressure is also on for Motorola. It too unveiled some new models at this week's consumer electronics show. It was facing a tough road even before the iPhone introduction.
By the way, to show its shift in focus, Apple has dropped "computer" from its name and will now be known as Apple Inc. Dell made a similar move a while back........
And speaking of Dell - the struggling tech company is showing-off its products for the digital home. Dell is updating its high-end XPS line. It also revealed an entertainment suite that will send high-definition video to a wide-screen Dell TV. And as part of its gaming strategy, Dell showed off a $5500 gaming computer that has a cooling system to prevent over-heating. Dell is trying to step up its competition with rival Hewlett-Packard - after ceding the throne to HP last year.
