M&S says green is the new black
One of Britain's biggest retailers Marks and Spencer aims to be carbon neutral by 2012.
The 200 million pound eco-plan will include making Marks and Spencer polyester clothing from recycled plastic bottles instead of oil. Chris Burns reports for Reuters FEATURED SPEAKER: Mike Barry, Head of Corporate Responsibility, Marks and Spencer
Another big British retailer Marks and Spencer has decided to put its green credentials in the shop window.
It's planning to spend 200 million pounds - nearly 400 million dollars - over the next five years with the aim of making the company carbon neutral by 2012.
Marks and Spencer plans to ban its waste from being dumped in landfill sites;
It will use unsold -out-of-date food as a source of recyclable energy; and the company will sell more polyester clothing made from recycled plastic bottles rather than oil.
Marks and Spencer management says this is what their customers want
And the store chain doesn't have any worries that spending this money on green policies will upset investors either
Marks and Spencer is gambling that adopting green policies will in the long-term attract new customers and lift profits. But even if that doesn't happen very quickly - M&S says it wont drop this strategy.
