Beckham aims to boost US soccer
David Beckham, who just signed the largest contract in sports, says he relishes the challenge represented by the United States.
Beckham appeared via satellite at a press conference Friday, a day after signing a deal with Major League Soccer reportedly worth up to $250 million over 5 years.
He's perhaps the most well-known soccer player in the world. And David Beckham will be paid accordingly. Thanks to a five-year, quarter of a billion dollar contract Beckham, will soon be known for a lot more than playing for the Los Angeles Galaxy.
Already a super-star endorser of a slew of household products, Beckham is already a marketer's dream..but the American market has yet to be fully tapped.
Phil dePicciotto is the president of Octagon, one of the largest sports marketing firms in the world.
Despite being dropped by England following last year's World Cup, Beckham is still one of the most recognizable and marketable sports figures in the world. And officials with Major League Soccer hope to capitalize on Beckham's star-power for a much-needed shot of publicity, and a boost in league attendance.
There is no doubting the financial muscle that Beckham brought to his current team-- Real Madrid... The club has admited that a substantial part of the 292 million euros they made last season was due to Beckham's presence in the squad. Major League Soccer is hoping for similar windfall.
